I Broke My Streak, Now What?

It happens to all of us at one time or another, you open your Streaking App and get that sinking feeling in your stomach as you see a 0 looking back at you. After frantically trying to remember if maybe you did your streak but didn’t record it, you realize that you did in fact break your streak. Now what?

You actually have several options at this point. In many ways, breaking a streak is a wonderful learning opportunity. There are chances for reflection and discovery that are uniquely available now. Here’s what to do next:

First, take some time to grieve. Whether the streak was short or long, it is okay to feel disappointed that it is over. Celebrate the progress you made, be sad that the streak is broken, and get ready to move forward.

Next, it is a good idea to evaluate your streak. Why did it get broken? Is it too hard or maybe there are too many outside contingencies needed (ie- specialized equipment or a certain amount of time)? Also take some time to consider whether this streak is something that you want to be an intentional part of your life. Is it helping you become the person you want to be?

After evaluating your streak, you have three choices. You can restart your streak just as it is. The app will have a record of the longest number of days you have completed that streak and you can use that number as a benchmark to beat. You can also leave your streak. If you have decided it is not adding to your life, don’t feel bad about leaving it behind. Finally, you can adjust your streak and start again. Find a way to make it more simple or remove some contingencies and get streaking.

Breaking a streak, while disheartening, can be a possibility for more growth. With the right mindset, and following these tips, you can turn an ending into a new, and even better, beginning
