"S" is for Growth

Recently, Brandon Sanderson, a New York times best-selling sci-fi fantasy writer, launched a Kickstarter campaign that became the number 1 Kickstarter campaign of all time raking in over $33,000,000 which he will use to publish 4 novels he wrote during the pandemic. These are not short novels, 400,000+ words. In discussing his writing, he said that he writes every day and he aims to write a certain number of words every day. His work is writing every day, his focus is writing every day, his mindset is “how many days in a row can I write at least a sentence 500 words?”

When you start getting consecutive in your behavior you start seeing success. The activities you complete every day create compound interest which when you get to day number 100 and counting you start to see that interest; when you get to day 500 and counting you start to see dividends, and when you get to day 1,765 and counting you see output like never before.

Growing is our desired state, resting is our default state. Growth requires work and our natural inclination is rest. To grow you must do. You cannot grow without doing. Doing is the work. Is work hard? It can be. But then you have the old adage, “Choose a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” However, to grow, work is a necessary part of the equation, but it doesn’t have to be hard work it needs to be consecutive work. That’s right, work does not need to be hard it needs to be consecutive.

“But wait a second,” you shout, “if it’s not hard, it’s not worth doing.” This is bunk. There are many things worth doing that are easy, i.e. Sunday afternoon nap, picnic in the park, watching a movie with a loved one, playing tag with kids, etc. All easy activities worth doing. What then is the work of growth?

The work of growth is in consecutive behavior completed through time. Every successful person in whatever field has one common characteristic, they are consecutive. Now, usually you hear they are consistent, but consistent does not, by itself, determine success. Consecutive consistency determines success. The work of growth is doing every day activities that cause growth. Doing an activity every day is a steak and Streaking is how you intentionally set up personal winning streaks.

"S" is for growth because when you are streaking you are growing.

Keep Streakin’,
