What Streaking Has Done for Me: Measuring the Intangibles

For as long as I can remember, I have been encouraged to set goals in all the important aspects of my life. I was specifically taught the SMART method of having a goal that is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This idea has been a wonderful tool for me in many ways. However, I struggled with the facets of my life that didn’t fit nicely into the SMART mold. How can I have a specific goal to strengthen my relationship with my spouse? Or how can I measure my efforts to be a more organized person? This is the gap in personal development that streaking has filled for me.

Most goals have a tangible aspect to them because that is easy to measure. How will I know if I am in better shape? I will have lost a certain number of pounds by a specific time. How will I know if my business is successful? It will have a certain number of customers or a certain amount of revenue by a specific time. But how will I know if I have become a more thoughtful person? I can’t have a certain number of friends by a specific date. It would be hard to measure how many of my daily thoughts are about others instead of myself. Yet it is important to me to intentionally become a more thoughtful person. Enter streaking.

When I began my streaking journey, I started crafting my personal be statement. This is

a statement of the type of person I want to be in my life. Part of my be statement includes the phrase “I want to be a more thoughtful person.” I have always wanted to be someone who thought of others, a person who remembered things about my friends and loved ones that were important to them. I want to be a person who reaches out to others and provides space for them. In order to be that person, I have to work on it every day. Streaking provides an intentional framework to guide my actions. My laughably simple streak is to send at least one thoughtful text daily. Rarely is it just one text. Often it opens up conversations. Always it helps me focus for a period of time on others.

Streaking is a powerful tool because it can be adapted to fit any need. The power of consistency opens the door of intentionality. When we intentionally choose to craft our lives, we unlock potential and possibilities that previously felt out of reach. Purposefully creating and completing streaks is helping me become the person I want to become in a diverse range of aspects in my life, especially those that are difficult to measure.
