You Don't Think Happiness, You DO Happiness

Reading Adam Grant’s book, “Think Again” the following quote shouted streaking,

“When we pursue happiness, we often start by changing our surroundings…As Ernest Hemingway wrote, ‘You can’t get away from yourself by moving from one place to another’...Our happiness often depends more on what we do than where we are. It’s our actions—not our surroundings—that bring us meaning and belonging.”

Happiness is born out of doing activities you deem meaningful. Not thinking about them not dreaming about them but doing them. However, we are often thwarted in our efforts to do meaningful activities because we feel to do them, we need to invest extraordinary time, money, and energy, three things of which we never have enough. We promise resolutely, “when I get the time, or money, or energy I will write that book, or invest in that microcredit fund, or teach a business class at the local community college.” What we find is the book never gets written, the funds are not available for the microcredit program, and your wisdom is never shared in a business class. Why? Because we unwittingly follow the laws of never achieving anything which are:

Law #1: Do it BIG or Don’t do it at All

Law #2: Don’t Record Anything Until You Accomplish Something

Law #3: Don’t Share with Anyone What You Want to Do Until You’ve Done It

Following these laws have laid waste to many of the meaningful activities that bring sustained happiness to life. So, what do you do? Streak.
